The Importance of Young People in Sport: Embracing Youth Leadership for a Brighter Future

International Youth Day sport 2024 ()

As we celebrate International Youth Day, today is the ideal moment to reflect on the critical role young people play in the world of sports. Serena Mahandru, Governance Officer at the Alliance, sheds light on the ongoing efforts within the sports sector to create meaningful opportunities for young people.

Youth involvement in sports is about much more than just physical activity; it’s a powerful catalyst for personal growth, community building, and the development of essential leadership skills. However, to fully tap into the potential of young people, national governing bodies (NGBs) must take deliberate steps to incorporate youth panels and forums into their governance structures. This forward-thinking approach can pave the way for the next generation to become the future leaders of sport.

Unified Action – Diversifying Sports Governance

In an effort to diversify sports governance and cultivate inclusive cultures within National Governing Bodies, the Youth Sport Trust, in partnership with Sporting Equals and 2-3 Degrees, launched a 12-month pilot research project known as Unified Action. This initiative signified a shift towards ensuring that sports governance reflects the diversity of the communities it serves.

As one of the eight young changemakers involved in this project, I had the privilege of contributing to a movement that will shape the future of sports governance, particularly for young individuals from diverse backgrounds. The project focused on partnering with three NGBs—Paddle UK, Swim England, and England Golf—to provide them with guidance and support as they work to create more inclusive governance structures that welcome ethnically diverse young people.

Case Studies: Paddle UK, Swim England, and England Golf

The work we did with Paddle UK, Swim England, and England Golf serves as a powerful example of how sports organisations can make strides towards inclusivity. Through Unified Action, these NGBs received tailored advice and resources to help them navigate the complexities of diversifying their governance structures. These collaborations have not only raised awareness about the importance of inclusivity but have also set the stage for long-term cultural change within these organisations.

To further support these efforts, we have developed a comprehensive framework designed to be a critical tool for sports organisations aiming to foster inclusive environments. This framework will ensure that young individuals, particularly those from diverse backgrounds, can thrive in governance roles and contribute meaningfully to the future of sport.
